2 Where the edging fabric pieces meet at the corners, cut the edges on the diagonal and stitch them together to make neat mitered seams.

3 Turn in 1/4 inch all around the edging strip, clipping the corners where the edges overlap, and press. Fold over each mitered corner, and then turn in the edging strip all the way around the mat, mitering the corners as you fold. Pin in place. Hem all around using slip stitch, including the folded miters. Iron to finish.

Tiny scraps of fabric left over from kitchen curtains were used to make the flower petals on this placemat. The little basket on the napkin ring was made using appliqué, while the flowers are simply small short stitches layered on top of each other.
